Installation is easy. You use the same tools and fasteners when installing
EVERGRAIN™
as you would when installing natural wood, so there's no extra work or time
involved.
Special
care should be taken when handling EVERGRAIN™
decking products. Because they are heavier and more flexible than wood, do not
attempt to lift or carry more than you can handle safely at one time.
Click any
index link below for specific installation and maintenance topics, or scroll
down to view all the topics.
Working With EVERGRAIN™
Decking
EVERGRAIN™ decking material outperforms
traditional wood board products and can be installed using the tools and
techniques common with the installation of natural wood boards.

Installation Requirements
 |
Requires
no special tools. |
 |
Can be
installed using pneumatic tools. |
 |
Provides
a consistent fastening surface without knots or weak spots. |
 |
Works
with most fasteners. |
 |
Saws,
drills, and nails just like traditional wood. |
 |
Will not
split or splinter when
applied according to manufacturer's instructions. |

Storage
of EVERGRAIN™
Decking
EVERGRAIN™
products should be stored only on a rigid flat surface. When stacking EVERGRAIN™
products use vertically aligned supports beginning at each end and spaced no
more than 24 inches apart throughout the length of the product.

Safely
Handling EVERGRAIN™
Decking
The manufacturing process used to produce EVERGRAIN™
decking creates a product that is heavier and more flexible than traditional
wood products. Use care and do not attempt to lift or carry more EVERGRAIN™
decking material than you can safely handle at one time. Proper clothing and
safety glasses should be worn at all times when working with EVERGRAIN™
decking.
Determination of the effectiveness, suitability, and safety of any application
or use of EVERGRAIN™
decking is solely the responsibility of the Owner and/or Contractor. Building
code regulations vary, and the Owner and/or Contractor should consult local
building and safety codes for specific requirements prior to the application of
EVERGRAIN™
products.

Cutting
EVERGRAIN™
Decking
The unique design of EVERGRAIN™
decking eliminates concern over grain direction, knots, and soft spots. When
working with EVERGRAIN™
products, saw blades and router bits with Carbide tips are recommended. For best
results, use saw blades with two (2) teeth per inch. To avoid clogging when
drilling holes in EVERGRAIN™
decking, frequently remove shavings by removing the drill bit from the hole.

Spacing
EVERGRAIN™
Decking
EVERGRAIN™
decking will expand and contract with changes in temperature. The amount of
expansion and contraction will vary depending upon board size. Smaller boards
will expand less and larger board sizes will expand more. When installing
EVERGRAIN™
decking, side-to-side spacing should be a minimum of 1/8" between adjacent
boards.
* When
installing decking boards, end-to-end spacing between them should be
approximately 1/16" for every 20° increment of temperature difference between
the temperature during installation and the maximum expected summertime
temperature in your area. Example: 80° F at time of installation and a maximum
expected summertime temperature of 100° F equals an end-to-end gap spacing of
1/16".

Fastening EVERGRAIN™
Decking
EVERGRAIN™ decking can be fastened by screws, nails, pneumatic
fasteners or one of many concealed fastening systems available. The fastening
decision is solely the responsibility of contractor, installer or homeowner.
EVERGRAIN™
does not recommend or endorse any specific fastening system. Like wood,
pre-drilling the end/edges of the board is necessary to avoid splitting or
cracking the material. Skirting should be fastened with 3 fasteners every 8" on
a solid surface for best results.
To receive
maximum performance and minimize the possibility of rust staining, it is
recommended that hot dipped galvanized or stainless steel fasteners be used. For
enhanced appearance hidden fastening systems can be used. A greater force is
required to drive nails into decking, especially when installing cold
temperatures.
When
installing fasteners into decking always wear safety gloves and glasses. Decking
must be fastened at every joist
 |
NAILS
- Hold nails by hand until they are driven 1/2 the length of the fastener into
the fencing.
|
 |
WOOD
SCREWS/LAG BOLTS - In colder temperatures we recommend pre-drilling
fastener holes no larger than 3/4 the diameter of the shaft of the wood screw,
lag bolt or nail being used.
|
 |
STRING LINE - The use of a string line to align fasteners/boards is
recommended to enhance the appearance of your fence (Do not use a chalk line).
|
 |
FINISHING TOUCH - Deck boards will swell over fastener heads. Gently
hammer the material down to cover the fastener head. To minimize this from
occurring pre-drill fastener holes.
|
 |
PNEUMATIC NAILER - When using pneumatic nail guns follow the nail gun
manufacturer's installation and safety instruction. |

Removing Stains
Mild stains may be removed with a common deck power wash detergent containing
sodium hypochlorite. Tougher, ground in stains can be cleaned with cleaners
containing phosphoric acid.
Care and Cleaning of Your EverGrain® Deck
EverGrain® decks and railings are easy to
keep clean and free of residue build-up. Below you'll find
basic guidelines for periodic cleaning that will help
maintain the natural beauty of your deck.
Reducing Dirt & Grime
Semi-annual cleaning of your deck is
recommended to reduce dirt, dust, grime and other residue
build-up. When cleaning, rinse your deck with a garden hose
using a fan-tip nozzle at a
pressure not exceeding 1,000 psi.
Regular cleaning may not eliminate all
dirt, dust, grime and other residue build-up on your deck.
For a more thorough cleaning of your EverGrain® deck, use a
deck wash containing Sodium Hypochlorite such as those
listed below:
BEHR® Multi-Surface Deck Prep Cleaner &
Mildew Stain Remover
ARMOR ALL® E-Z Deck Wash
OLYMPIC® Deck Wash
Removing Rust Stains
Metal outdoor furniture can leave rust
marks on your deck. Therefore, we recommend that you apply
appropriate plastic or vinyl tips to metal furniture to
prevent staining.
If rust stains do appear on your EverGrain®
deck, they can often be removed using deck cleaners
containing Oxalic Acid or Phosphoric Acid such as those
listed below:
BEHR® Wood Cleaner Brightener Conditioner
Flood® Dekswood® Deck Cleaner Brightener
Cleaning Oil and Grease Stains
To keep your deck in the best possible
shape, we also recommend the use of grill mats to reduce the
risk of grease stains associated with grills.
Should grease or oil stain the deck's
surface, it is important to clean the stain immediately
using a commercial degreasing agent such as those listed
below:
Gojo® Natural Orange Pumice Hand Cleaner
Castrol Super Clean
Removing Suntan Lotion
Since suntan lotions and oils can
potentially stain your deck, please take precautions to
avoid these types of spills.
These stains can often be removed using
commercial degreasing agents such as those listed below. Be
sure to remove as much of the lotion spill as possible with
water before using cleaning agents.
Gojo® Natural Orange Pumice Hand Cleaner
Dawn Soap
Removing Mold and Mildew
Periodically rinse your deck with a garden
hose, using a fan-tip nozzle at a
pressure not exceeding 1,000 psi, to help reduce
the occurrence of mold and mildew.
Mold and mildew stains are a natural
result of moisture. These stains can often be removed using
cleaners containing Sodium Hypochlorite such as those listed
below:
BEHR® Multi-Surface Deck Prep Cleaner &
Mildew Stain Remover
ARMOR ALL® E-Z Deck Wash
OLYMPIC® Deck Wash
Additional Tips
 | Remove food, spills and other debris
and clean immediately to minimize the possibility of
staining.
|
 | Always test any cleaner on a small
portion of your deck before cleaning the entire deck.
|
 | Always follow manufacturers'
application instructions when using any cleaner.
|
 | Please note that any cleaner can
lighten the color of your deck.
|
 | Place mats under metal objects to
protect against rust stains.
|
 | Place grill mats under your grill to
protect your deck from grease spills.
|
 | Never mix two or more cleaning agents
when cleaning your deck.
|
 | Do not use a metal shovel to remove
snow or ice from your deck, as you may cause damage to
the deck surface.
|
 | Always follow proper gapping
(installation) instructions to prevent water from
accumulating on your deck.
|
 | Keep the area under your deck clean
and well ventilated.
|
 | Never apply harsh solvents such as
acetone, gasoline, benzene, carbon tetrachloride or
paint thinner to your deck.
|
 | Sanding the surface to remove stains
is not recommended. |
Please
contact our technical service department with any
additional questions, comments or concerns.

Composite decking has a softer
(flexible) feel than wood primarily during the heat of summer. This is a natural
condition that will not affect the ability of the decking to perform as
warranted. For a more rigid feel, reduce joist span spacing 4". Decking cannot
be cantilevered (overhang edge of deck) since structural support is required.
EVERGRAIN™
PRODUCTS ARE NONSTRUCTURAL CONSTRUCTION PRODUCTS. THE DECKING PRODUCTS SHOULD
NOT BE USED AS A STRUCTURAL MANNER; INCLUDING JOISTS, LOAD BEARING COLUMNS,
STRINGERS, OR BEAMS.
For best
results add an additional joist at the end joints to increase stiffness.

Important EverGrain™ Product Information
 | Make safety of the workspace the prime
consideration. |
 | In order to determine the most desirable
layout, view all deck boards (on decking joist or any other acceptable
surface) prior to cutting or fastening. |
 | Discuss any desired material changes with the
supplier prior to cutting or fastening the decking to the structure.
|
 | Like wood, every piece of EVERGRAIN™ decking
is different. The weathering process for EVERGRAIN™ decking products will vary
due to region, climate, rain, sunlight exposure, etc. Some variation in
decking shade will appear due to weathering that will occur on the supplier's
yard prior to shipment and due to different product lots. |
 | EVERGRAIN™ colors Redwood, Gray, Cedar and
Cape Cod Gray will weather to a reasonably consistent color, with some
naturally appearing variation. |
 | Composite decking has a softer (flexible) feel
than wood primarily during the heat of summer. This is a natural condition
that will not affect the ability of the decking to perform as warranted. For
more ridged fell, reduce joist span spacing 4". |
 | EVERGRAIN™ Decking should always be
installed in accordance with the application guidelines. Deviations from these
guidelines may result in unsatisfactory performance. |
 | For best results, EVERGRAIN™ Decking
should never be applied directly to any solid surface (concrete, membranes,
etc) or in conjunction with systems where inadequate drainage or improper
venting are found. |
 | Do No Notch EVERGRAIN™ post.
